What is a Notified Body [NB]
A notified body is an organization nominated by a government of one of the Member States of Europe and recognized by the European Commission. A notified body is nominated based on specific requirements, such as knowledge, experience, independence and resources to carry out the compliance audits.
The primary role of a Notified Body is to carry out conformity audit services under the conditions set out in the “New Approach” guidelines in support of CE Mark certification. This normally means that manufacturers are assessed for compliance with essential requirements in each directive. A conformity audit may consist of inspection, quality assurance, type examination or design examination, or a combination thereof. BSI is a notified body for many European directives.

What is a Nationally Recognised Test Laboratory [NRTL]?
A Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) is an independent organisation that certifies products for the U.S. market. NRTLs are recognised by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under Federal Code 29 CFR 1910.7 for products to be used in United States workplaces.

What is an Approved Body [ AB ]?
A conformity assessment body appointed by a UK Competent Authority to
undertake conformity assessment activities for the purposes of UKCA marking of products to be placed on the GB market.
Note: The term Approved Body is used generically in this document and should be read to include other categories of appointment such as Designated Body, Technical Assessment Body (TAB) and Recognised Third-Party Organisation (RTPO).
